WHY RIDE ZANSKAR?
Leave the crowded highways behind and ride into one of the last truly remote corners of the Indian Himalayas. This expedition follows the spectacular new route over Shinku La into Zanskar Valley, combining high-altitude adventure, dramatic mountain scenery, and authentic Himalayan culture.
The terrain shifts constantly — lush valleys near Manali give way to Zanskar’s stark, high-desert landscape. With an experienced crew handling logistics, you focus on the ride through some of India’s most breathtaking and least-visited terrain.
LANDSCAPES ALONG THE ROUTE
The route showcases an extraordinary variety of Himalayan environments. Riders begin among forests, rivers, and green valleys near Manali before entering the arid high-altitude landscapes of Lahaul and Zanskar. Snow-covered peaks, deep river gorges, and isolated mountain settlements create a constantly changing backdrop throughout the expedition.
THE JOURNEY
Starting in Manali, the route climbs through Lahaul Valley via Atal Tunnel, Keylong, and Jispa, then continues deeper into the mountains before entering the remote wilderness beyond Darcha. It crosses Shinku La (5,091m), rewarding riders with sweeping views before the descent into Zanskar Valley.
The descent passes isolated villages, ancient monasteries, and dramatic river gorges — including Gonbo Rangjon and Phugtal Monastery — before reaching Padum, the cultural heart of Zanskar. The expedition ends with a scenic drive to Leh along some of Ladakh’s newest mountain roads.
Why This Tour Is Unique
✓ Shinku La (5,091m) — one of the highest cycling passes in the Indian Himalayas
✓ The new Manali–Zanskar route — quieter than the busy Manali–Leh Highway
✓ Phugtal Monastery — built into a cliff above the Lungnak River
✓ Gonbo Rangjon — a sacred, pyramid-shaped peak on the route
✓ True wilderness — minimal traffic, remote villages, vast scenery
✓ Zanskari culture — real interaction with traditional Buddhist communities
✓ Fully supported — guides, vehicle, mechanic, and logistics included
Highlights
Phugtal Monastery
Built into a cliffside above the Lungnak River, Phugtal Monastery is one of the most extraordinary Buddhist monasteries in the Himalayas — reachable only on foot or by mule, which is part of what keeps it so remarkable.
Gonbo Rangjon
Riders pass beneath the sacred peak of Gonbo Rangjon, an isolated mountain revered by local communities. Its striking pyramid shape makes it one of the most photographed landmarks in Zanskar.
Remote Himalayan Cycling
This newly opened trans-Himalayan route connects Manali with the hidden Zanskar Valley. Unlike the more popular Himalayan routes, it stays quiet and largely untouched — minimal traffic, landscapes rarely seen by mainstream travellers.
Shinku La (5,091m)
One of the highest rideable mountain passes in the Indian Himalayas. The climb rewards riders with panoramic views of glaciers, rugged valleys, and snow-covered peaks — one of the most dramatic cycling experiences in India.
Authentic Zanskari Culture
Pass through remote villages where traditional Buddhist culture and mountain lifestyles remain largely unchanged, with real opportunities to meet local families and explore centuries-old settlements.
Fully Supported Expedition
Focus entirely on the adventure while our experienced team handles logistics, camping equipment, meals, mechanical support, luggage transport, and high-altitude safety throughout the journey.
