The Manali to Chandratal Lake Cycling Tour is one of the Indian Himalayas’ most rewarding short high-altitude cycling expeditions, covering approximately 110 kilometres over five days. Riders climb over Rohtang Pass, follow the wild Chandra River through the barren landscapes of Lahaul and Spiti, and climb steadily toward Chandratal — a crescent-shaped alpine lake set at 4,250 metres beneath the Chandrabhaga range. It’s an ideal introduction to high-altitude Himalayan cycling for riders who want a genuine mountain expedition without committing to a longer multi-week route.
Beyond the riding, the journey offers a raw, remote side of the Himalayas — glacial river crossings, wind-carved valleys, and nights spent camping under some of the clearest skies in India. With an experienced local guide, a dedicated support vehicle, mechanical assistance, oxygen and first-aid support, and carefully chosen camps along the route, riders can focus entirely on the ride while our team handles the logistics.
Starting from Manali, the route climbs steadily to Marhi before tackling Rohtang Pass (3,980m), the traditional gateway from Kullu Valley into Lahaul. From here, the road follows the Chandra River upstream through increasingly barren, high-altitude terrain toward Chhatru and Batal, gateway to the Kunzum region.
The final stretch to Chandratal Lake is the expedition’s centrepiece: a steady, exposed climb along a rough mountain track to one of the most photographed lakes in the Himalayas. Riders spend the night camping near Chandratal Lake beneath some of the clearest night skies in the Himalayas before returning to Manali the following day via the Atal Tunnel.
Climb Rohtang Pass (3,980m), the historic gateway from the green Kullu Valley into the high-altitude desert of Lahaul, and one of the defining climbs of the expedition.
Cycle alongside the glacial Chandra River through Chhatru and Batal, passing through dramatic gorges, barren mountain terrain, and remote high-altitude landscapes.
Chandratal Lake (4,250m), a crescent-shaped alpine lake famed for its changing colours and reflections of the surrounding Chandrabhaga peaks — one of the most iconic destinations in the Indian Himalayas.
Spend nights camping in some of the most remote, light-pollution-free locations in India, with clear night skies over Chhatru, Batal, and Chandratal.
Experience a genuine off-the-grid cycling expedition through Lahaul and Spiti’s cold desert landscapes, far from crowds and permanent settlements.

EXPEDITION ROUTE
Manali → Marhi → Rohtang Pass → Chhatru → Batal → Chandratal Lake → Manali (via Atal Tunnel)
Leaving Manali, riders climb steadily through pine forests and apple orchards toward Marhi, gaining altitude on the approach to Rohtang Pass. From Marhi, the route continues over Rohtang Pass into Lahaul, dropping riders into a starkly different landscape of barren mountains and glacial rivers on the way to Chhatru.
From Chhatru, the road follows the Chandra River upstream to Batal, with terrain becoming progressively rougher: gravel stretches, stream crossings, and exposed high-altitude riding define this stage. Batal serves as the final staging point before the push toward Chandratal.
The last leg to Chandratal Lake is short in distance but demanding in terrain, climbing a rough mountain track to the lake at 4,250 metres. Reaching the shoreline — often mirror-still, reflecting the surrounding peaks — is the emotional high point of the expedition, before the group drives back to Manali via the Atal Tunnel, closing the loop on a different route from the outbound leg.
