Ride the Newly Paved Darcha–Padum Road

Once a popular trekking trail, the Darcha–Padum route is now fully motorable. This newly surfaced road allows cyclists, motorcyclists, and even 4×2 vehicles to explore one of the most dramatic and culturally rich routes in the Indian Himalayas. It’s quickly becoming a favorite for high-altitude bike tours and road trips.

Cross Shinku La Pass (5,091 m)

At 5,091 meters, Shinku La (also spelled Shingo La) is one of the newest and highest motorable mountain passes in India. It offers an exhilarating climb, panoramic Himalayan views, and a thrilling descent into the secluded Zanskar Valley.

Visit Gonbo Rangjon and Phugtal Monastery

Gonbo Rangjon is a sacred, isolated mountain rising dramatically from the valley floor. Nearby, the trail to Phugtal Monastery—built into a cliffside cave—is a highlight of the route, offering both natural beauty and deep cultural significance. The monastery is only accessible on foot from the village of Purne.

    Explore Traditional Zanskari Villages

Travel through timeless villages like Purne, Reru, and Karsha. These remote settlements offer insights into traditional Zanskari and Ladakhi Buddhist culture, with options to stay in simple homestays or local guesthouses.

Route Options from Padum to Leh

From Padum, there are three distinct road routes to reach Leh:

    • Via Kargil (longest): Passes through Rangdum and Suru Valley—ideal for those with extra time.

    • Via Lingshed and Sirsir La – Lamayuru (moderate): Remote and rugged, crossing the lesser-known Sirsir La Pass.

    • Via Niraq – Nimmu (shortest, newest): Follows the newly constructed all-weather road through Zanskar Gorge, overlapping with the famous winter Chadar Trek route. Now open in warmer months and the fastest way to Leh.

    Scenic Final Drive to Leh

Whichever route you choose, the final drive into Leh offers surreal Himalayan landscapes, winding river valleys, steep gorges, and glimpses of Ladakh’s cultural heartland.

Why Choose the Manali to Leh via Zanskar Route?

This route offers a quieter, more immersive alternative to the classic Manali–Leh Highway. It combines adventure, solitude, and unique cultural experiences. With the new Darcha–Padum road, it’s now possible to explore this once-isolated region by cycle, motorbike, or car.
