Travel Essentials

  • Pack for cold nights – even in summer

  • Offline maps recommended – very limited signal

  • 4×4 vehicle or experienced local driver recommended

Know Before You Go:

  • Permit Requirements: Usually no special permits are required, but always carry valid ID and vehicle registration documents.
  • Connectivity: Expect intermittent phone signals throughout the Pangi Valley. BSNL generally offers the most reliable, though limited, coverage.
  • Fuel: Ensure you have a full tank when leaving Manali. Fuel is available at Tandi, and Keylong. There are no fuel stations beyond Tandi until Bairagarh, so plan accordingly.
  • Safety: Roads in the Pangi Valley are often narrow, unpaved in sections, and prone to landslides, especially after rains. Avoid travel during the monsoon season (July). An experienced driver with a 4×4 SUV is highly recommended. Be mindful of altitude sickness, especially when ascending Sach Pass; stay hydrated and ascend gradually.
  • Guided Option: Hiring a local driver-guide is strongly recommended, especially for first-time visitors or larger groups. They possess invaluable knowledge of the terrain, local customs, and can assist with logistics.
  • Local Cuisine: Be sure to try some local Himachali dishes like Siddu, Madra, and Dhaam during your stay.
  • Respect Local Culture: The Pangi Valley has a unique cultural heritage. Be respectful of local customs, traditions, and religious sites.
